Eré and J
That was the thing about Eré. He could carry a whole room, carry a melody nobody else could hear yet — but never a silence.
Until now.

TheLair opens soon.

The novella
A Dark Fantasy Horror Novella · S.J Con
To be honest I haven’t a clue what’s going on but I’ll try my best to explain.
J — from the Watcher’s Journal
Thana City was wet.
A man was standing in the middle of the footpath. Not blocking it. People moved around him.
His eyes were black. Just DarKness.
An ocean does not often acknowledge a droplet.
He saw something he shouldn’t have, it saw him too.
J sees things other people walk past. A man on a footpath with black eyes. A realm underneath the city that shouldn’t be there. Drawings he doesn’t remember making, of rooms he’s never been in.
Then the performers start going missing. One of them is the man he used to love.
Something crossed over. It’s hungry, it’s wearing a body that doesn’t fit, and it has already noticed that J can see it.

Some names begin things. Some names end them.
The world

He remembered what he had been — what he still was, underneath this.
In Dor’KrA he moved the way things moved when gravity was a fact for other creatures. Now the ground pushed back every time.
… He noticed him watching.

TrueForm
An Apex Eternal.
A force the realm bent for. Indestructible. Unstoppable.
It’s too big for the skin.
The skin will rip.
Rip it off.

The setting

The Neon Pulse
Neon everywhere. Stacked signs on buildings rising into low cloud, all of it smeared and doubled in the slick pavement below. The city sealed itself under the weather and lit itself from below, the way it always had.

From the sketchbook
I’ve had a word for the place for a long time — Dor’KrA — the one that came through in sleep, the first thing I ever had that felt like it belonged to this. I don’t know what it means. I just know it’s right.
Not a place with music in it. A place that is the music.

The language
Ka’aale’Ka is phonetic Irish — Gaeilge spelled for the realm. Apostrophe = pause. Capitals = the hit. Say what you see.
DrK and Dor’KrA are the same word. Dorcha. Dark.

Resonance
I’ve been thinking about resonance. Not the word. The thing. It’s closer to a beat you feel in your chest before you hear it.
Rhythm not as a metaphor. As physics. They don’t have rhythm. They are rhythm — the way a wave isn’t water that’s moving, it’s the moving itself.
They sense through it, drawn to registers that match their own, the way a tuning fork answers its note and not the one beside it.

The music did what the tablets didn’t — gave the pressure somewhere to go.
In Dor’KrA, resonance moved in currents. Here, the humans called it music.

Four. Without question. Against the flatness of everything else they were the only light in a dark room — candle flames, each one distinct, each with its own frequency.
Be’E’ThA. Human resonance, most evident in those he deemed rhythm-carriers. The humans called it music.

Apt 624
J had found Pus outside in the rain a few years ago. Sitting on the step. He had been there a while based on how wet he was and had made a considered decision about this doorway.
That cat was not normal. In all this time J had never once caught him being surprised by anything. Whatever was coming, Pus already knew.

The Duvhrim
The Duvhrim. Seven strong. The hoods hiding what was beneath. Thin lines of black liquid ran down their arms. The sound they made didn’t travel through air — it was heard internally.
— J

His equal
She was his equal in strength, resonance and ferocity.
His equal and opposite. Magnificent and terrifying for the same reasons.

In the shadows
At the far edge of the clearing, something stood still in the shadows and watched. Intently.

Duv’ishkA
The liquid was black. Thicker than water, almost oily, but it had no smell.
It clung to his skin, dense, creating a weight that was pulling him downward. In the darkness it looked like the Duv’ishkA, the dark liquid expanses of Dor’KrA. Almost.

Kol’Bann
Ancient. The source, they say. The beginning.
Something is wrong.

The Rot
The smell of decay lingers here.

BrIS’LyN
A fracture line has emerged in the centre of Dor’KrA, originating from the great spire. It is deepening and moving towards the east.

Sli’Bhlum
The vast range spanning Dor’KrA.

Munn’Tair
The ash plains. The heat burns the skin, over and over again.

RiverTique
Thana City’s waterfront.

Sky68
The tallest building in Ratchathana City.

Duv’ishkA
It waits below the surface.

Join TheLair
TheLair was the one everyone knew, the place to be.
They converged at a specific point. That point made the flicker burn brighter.
He stared at it from the dark.
